Immediate Denture(s)

When extraction of some or all of your natural teeth becomes unavoidable, an immediate denture is a solution. The treatment will help you avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth.

Impressions are made of your existing teeth and gums before extraction, and these are used as working models for constructing your new dentures.

From these models, we are able to copy and construct a denture/s, duplicating your original teeth or, if you desire, constructing a denture that will improve your appearance. If you desire, you can request a pre-processing viewing of the waxed denture for final approval. Once the approval has been approved, the denture/s is processed into acrylic denture/s.

At your extraction appointment, your immediate denture/s is inserted by your dentist/oral surgeon, avoiding the embarrassment of having no teeth during your healing period. Extraction of your natural teeth can be done under local anaesthetic in the surgery or under general anaesthetic in the hospital; this is something to be discussed with your dentist /oral surgeon.

Important Facts About Immediate Dentures

In most cases, we cannot try the denture/s before your extractions are complete. In some cases, aesthetic compromises may have to be made in favour of structural integrity, function or limited space.

During the healing period, postoperative instructions must be followed carefully. Your gums and bone will recede to a much smaller size because the tooth sockets are closing and healing. Regular visits may be required as healing progresses to ease any rubbing and sore spots. Temporary linings or tissue conditioners may be required to ensure a positive fit. This procedure may need to be repeated a number of times based on your individual healing rate.

At the completion of the healing period, a permanent reline (new fitting surface) or even a new denture may be constructed to ensure a comfortable and exact fit. Irreparable damage can be caused if the denture/s are not remodelled/relined after initial gum shrinkage, which usually occurs between three and six months.

Addition Cost Involved in Immediate Denture Construction

Temporary liners, tissue conditioners and relines are additional services requiring payment beyond the service of supplying the immediate denture/s; please ask for an estimated cost for these treatments.

Care & Maintenance Tips

Denture Life Span

Dentures are designed to last between 5 and 7  years, but as with most things, how long they last depends on how well they are cared for. As with natural teeth, dentures should be maintained and regularly checked by our denture clinic to ensure they fit correctly.  When dentures are first inserted, they fit the gums snugly, but as you get older, your gums will shrink/recede, resulting in the denture's fit being compromised. As a result, food may get under the denture(s) and start to break regularly. The everyday use of your denture means the teeth will wear down over time.
